在5×01《Gap Year》中，Dre和Bow将Junior送到华盛顿的霍华德大学后不久，Junior突然回家宣布自己将休学一年（或者说「间隔年」），这让他们感觉十分担心。Junior整天无所事事，于是Dre强迫他到广告公司和自己一起工作。Junior居然取得了一定程度的成功，这让他对大学的信念开始动摇：我真的有必要去上大学吗？与此同时，双胞胎Jack和Diane产生一个疑问……他们是否该继续共处一室？他们现在是中学生（七年级）了，但他们的社会地位和以前完全不一样。Bo在她那个疯狂的工作场所交了一些新朋友，甚至是铁杆盟友。 第五季的故事时间向前跳跃了三个月，Dre和Bow不仅挽救了婚姻，而且现在过得还不错。 本季会有另一个警察主题集，如同2016年《Hope》这集。虽然这集的内容不一定涉及白人警察对黑人平民滥用暴力，但是这集肯定会说黑人内部的矛盾心...
